Kleine Zeitung’s plan for a web run by AI agents
Kleine Zeitung is preparing for a shift in which AI assistants retrieve and summarise journalism for audiences. Head of Product & Data Sebastian Krause describes a model where subscribers can use their own assistants to access content as part of their subscription, while other AI crawlers are selectively admitted and monitored through a paid-access system.
The publisher’s crawler data suggested that current, distinctive local reporting may be more valuable to AI systems than a large static archive. It is also developing simplified pages for machine access to reduce processing costs.
The case study raises practical questions for publishers: what reporting can only they provide, how should AI access be priced, and how can publishers preserve a direct relationship with audiences when assistants mediate discovery?
